About Us

Jim Stewart

Jim joined Carmichael Hill in 1993 and is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER practitioner, Chief Compliance Officer, and sole owner of Carmichael Hill. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting. At the time, Carmichael Hill was a Registered Investment Advisor for high net worth individuals and a Third-Party Administrator for small business retirement plans. During the first few years Jim earned his stripes learning about investments, retirement planning, insurance, estate planning, and the ten thousand other challenges involved in working in a small business (there were just two people then).

In the late 1990’s, Carmichael Hill spun off its retirement plan business and Jim became a partner. He went on to earn the Chartered Retirement Plan Specialist (CRPS) and Registered Paraplanner (RP) designations. Under his guidance, the firm shifted to focus solely on serving individuals and businesses as a Registered Investment Advisor. In 2007, he went on to earn the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification and in 2013 became the sole owner of Carmichael Hill.

For Jim, it’s the people that make this business worthwhile. With almost thirty years of experience here, he’s worked with many clients for decades and some across generations. It’s a uniquely rewarding experience to see the harvest that comes from the seeds you helped a client plant years ago.

Jim lives in Olney with his wife, Julie, and their two sons. He serves as a Deacon of Shady Grove PCA, is a committee member of the local Cub Scout Pack and is a coach through the Olney Boys and Girls Club. He is an avid outdoorsman and can be found running, biking, camping, and spending time with his family on the baseball fields across Maryland when not in the office.

Jeff Grodsky

Jeff joined the Carmichael Hill team in July 2015 and is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner. However, his story begins in 2000 with a role at AFC Asset Management Services here in Gaithersburg. Jeff started in operations learning about the machinery that makes an advisory business hum before working his way up to trader and finally advisor. In 2012 he left to form an independent registered investment advisory firm, ACI Group, with a partner. As one might imagine, Jeff was instrumental in building the company and getting ACI off the ground.

He served as Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer and went on to earn several additional licenses while there, including the Maryland life and health insurance license, the Series 3 national commodities futures license, and the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification. In 2014 he left the company he helped build for NADA Retirement Trust, a Maryland third-party administrator/record-keeper. It was at NADA that Jeff earned yet another qualification, the Qualified 401(k) Administrator (QKA) credential. He became an expert on ERISA retirement plans while acting as the relationship manager for plan sponsors.

A true glutton for punishment (a little too Matt maybe), Jeff also studied hard to achieve the Certified Divorce Financial Analyst® (CDFA) designation. Fewer than 6,000 advisors globally carry this designation, making Jeff uniquely positioned to help individuals navigate the murky waters of divorce.

Jeff is the hometown hero of the office having grown up right here in Gaithersburg. He graduated from Watkins High School and later the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland (go Terps!) He is married, has three wonderful kids, and lives in Columbia. When not in the office you can find him rooting for the Jets, trying new restaurants, playing baseball, or spending time with his family.

Matt Bacon

Matt is the newest addition to the Carmichael Hill team having joined in June of 2019. A native to Austin, TX, Matt spent several years out of the country while attending the University of Hull in the UK, where he earned a degree in Economics and Finance. He stayed in the UK working for a large multinational energy company as an economic analyst before returning to Austin in 2011 and jumping into the financial advisory world.

He began is career at MassMutual working almost exclusively as an insurance agent, which was a poor fit for his skills and professional goals. After spending just one year there, he moved to a local wealth management firm called Capital Strategies. It was there that he earned his series 7 and series 66 licenses before moving on to gain the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation in 2014. Matt was responsible for running nearly all aspects of running an advisory business, including business development, financial planning, investment administration, insurance, estate planning, operations, and practice management. He likes to tell us that he knows “enough to be dangerous wherever you put me”.

After Capital Strategies was acquired, he moved to the wealth management division of a local credit union where he worked as a lead advisor. He was responsible for nearly 450 relationships while there and has some impressive time management skills as a result. In 2019 he moved to Washington, D.C. and made Carmichael Hill his home.

Matt doesn’t yet have a family like Jeff and Jim, but he tells us he’s working on it. He has an adorable Golden Doodle named Coop and is lifelong Cowboys fan, but only because he secretly craves disappointment. You can find him watching football, playing soccer, or hitting up a dog park with Coop when he’s not in the office.
